“Hi, my name is George, and my family has been raising Hereford cattle for over 70 years.”
I took over the farm from my father, Walter, who began our herd back in 1946. By 1979, he had grown it to 80 cows, making it one of the largest horned herds in the UK at the time.
His deep knowledge and passion for Hereford beef have been passed down to me, and I’m proud to continue in his footsteps, now alongside my wife and daughter.
I take great pride in upholding the highest standards for Hereford cattle worldwide. In 2023, we brought home the Herd of the Year trophy to Pembrokeshire for the third time—a family achievement that fills us with pride.
Looking ahead, the Thorne family is confident that the Hereford breed’s popularity will only continue to rise, especially as the focus on food sustainability grows. Unlike Continental cattle, Herefords don’t require concentrates to thrive. They are easy and cost-effective to keep, fattening off grass, which makes them an ideal choice for sustainable farming. While other cattle might fetch higher prices at sale, the higher costs involved in raising them make Herefords, in my opinion, a far better choice for farmers committed to sustainability.
